Deputy Secretary Negroponte, who led the U.S. delegation to the 2007 inauguration of Mauritanian President Abdallahi, called President Abdallahi this morning to affirm U.S. support for his immediate restoration to power and Mauritania’s return to constitutional rule. He applauded President Abdallahi’s defense of democratic principles as he remains under house arrest and noted the United States will continue to monitor the situation very closely.
